Taking that
perfect picture of your much treasured finished
work of art.
Be it for a
pattern or e-pattern cover, selling on ebay,
etsy or just for your blog. You want to make it
perfect...A perfect picture can be what helps
make that sale. Internet sellers are at a bit of
a disadvantage to the brick and mortar shops.
Your customers can't pick up your item and turn
it over in their hands. So how to best portray
your work of art that has taken hours to make?
Firstly a
good camera is a big help. You want something
that has the capacity to take a good photo to
start with. Next is your setting. I find that
taking a photo outdoors gives you the best
lighting. Usually in the mid to late afternoon,
but before dusk. This gives you the best ambient
lighting. Never take your photo in direct
sunlight. This will give shadows and distort
your pic.
Now for the
all important props. I must say that a good prop
can make or break your picture. Bearing in mind
the item that you are going to sell or blog. Say
for example you have made something to do with
sewing, e.g. needlecase. On it's own it will
just be a needlecase. However should you have an
old vintage sewing machine or some cotton
spools, add this into the picture setting.
One other
good point to remember is, if you item is light
in colour, try to use a dark background. One of
my fav's is a wood shutter. Now if your item is
dark in colour, use a light background..again I
have a white wood shutter. This will bring out
the shape of your treasure, but also lend to the
primitive look.
For
Christmas items, add in some pinecones or some
sprigs of fir tree. I love to use treenware
bowls for those faux fruits or other kitchen
oriented handmades. These are bit a few tips.
Using your imagination is the best tool you
have. Experiment with different props or
backgrounds. Take a series of pictures, take the
time to view them on your computer to gauge the
'best' look.
Always
remember in your description of items for sale
to make a note what is a prop and not for sale.
Hope you
enjoy taking your photos. As this too is an art
form in it's own right.
